As heating costs continue to rise, more and more Richmond residents are
increasing the insulation in their properties - and windows are a great
place to start as they are responsible for a large proportion of heat
loss. This page covers all things to do with windows
in Richmond upon Thames - double glazing,
sash window repair / installation and window shutters.
A window shutter
is a solid and stable window covering usually consisting of a frame of
vertical stiles and horizontal rails (top, center and bottom). Set
within this frame can be louvres (both operable or fixed, horizontal or
vertical), solid panels, fabric, glass and most any other item that can
be mounted within a frame. Shutters may be employed for a variety of
reasons, including controlling the amount of sunlight that enters a
room, to provide privacy, to protect against weather and to enhance the
aesthetics of a building. Depending on the application, and the
construction of the window frame, shutters can be mounted to fit within
the opening or to overlap the opening. The term window shutter includes
both interior shutters, used on the inside of a house or building, and
exterior shutters, used on the outside of a structure. On some styles of
buildings it is common to have shutters to cover the doors as well as
the windows.
A sash window is made of one or more movable
panels or "sashes" that form a frame to hold panes of glass which
are often separated from other panes (or "lights") by narrow bars.
Although any window with this style of glazing is technically "a
sash", the term is used almost exclusively to refer to windows where
the glazed panels are opened by sliding vertically. The design of
the sash window is attributed to the English scientist and inventor,
Robert Hooke and the oldest known examples of sash windows were
installed in England in the 1670s, for example at Ham House, London.
Sash windows are often found in Georgian and
Victorian houses, and the classic arrangement has three panes across
by two up on each of two sashes, giving a "six over six" panel
window, although this is by no means a fixed rule.
