Worried whether the garage is going to do a professional job?  Look for these warning signs.

1. An unprofessional atmosphere
Are the mechanics impatient or condescending? Are they reluctant to answer your questions? Do they try to pressure or scare you into making decisions? If so, you're better off leaving. This is not the kind of garage that you can trust.

2. A sloppy, chaotic work area
"Look at the appearance of the shop, Good responsible shops should be neat and organized with modern equipment.

3. An ever-growing repair bill
Does a simple, routine repair become complicated and expensive? All of a sudden the work is three or four times the advertised price, that might be a sign of caution.

4. Nothing comes in writing
Is the garage willing to give you a work order or estimate in writing? Are its work rates clearly posted? What kind of warranty does the garage place on its repairs? Ask for a written copy, not just their word.

There are around 19,000 garages approved to carry out MOT testing in the country. The blue 'three triangles' logo, which stations have to display, identifies approved test stations.

All approved MOT test garages should have:

1. A test bay and observation area housed in a weatherproof building. The test facilities must be reasonably free from oil contamination, exhaust fumes, noise or other pollution from adjacent work areas.

2. Safe and easy access via metalled road from the site entrance to the building entrance, such that vehicles can enter and leave the garage in a forward direction
adequate off-road parking.

3. Sufficient inspection facilities, including underside access, for any vehicle repair or servicing work.
