Once again Sport England’s ‘Active People’ survey finds that Richmond Borough has the highest percentage of adults taking part in sport every week, with more than 50% stretching their legs on a regular basis.
We also learned that 52% of 14-16 year olds take part in weekly sport which again ranks us number one in the country.
Cllr Meena Bond, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Sport, said:
“We pride ourselves in our investment in sport and leisure activities – helping residents stay fit and healthy. In our borough alone we have 66 playing pitches, 58 tennis courts, and four bowling greens.
There are also more than 200 sports clubs with an estimated 32,500 members and Richmond Council provides superb sports facilities which have swimming pools and gyms and have an annual attendance which exceeds one million visits.”
However, it’s not so pretty on a national basis.
Between October 2013 and October 2014 only 15.6m engaged in some form of sport vs 15.7m for the same period for the previous year.
Swimming was the worst-hit sport – with 245,000 fewer people taking part once a week – although there were increases for football, rugby union, cricket, athletics and netball.
