Olympic Cyclists – Women’s Road Race

July 29th 2012 – the Women’s Olympic Road Race shot through Richmond Borough.

Photos not as good as the men’s race … partly because i had to hold a small child at the same time… in the rain.

The Women’s Road Cycling Race – with Emma Pooley and Lucy Martin (GB)

Brazil lead the pack, but Team GB’s Lucy Martin is right behind

Closer shot of the lead group.  Emma Pooley (GB) on left.

The British team was represented by Nicole Cooke, Lizzie Armitstead, Lucy Martin, and Emma Pooley (who had a puncture early on, but still got back to the race).

In this race Lizzie Armitstead won Team GB’s first 2012 medal, just behind Marianne Vos (Netherlands) and Olga Zabelinskaya (Russia) third.  The rainy conditions were perfect for Lizzie and she was absolutely delighted to have won silver, but felt that she could have started sprinting earlier and given herself a better chance of the gold.  She puts this down to  feeling almost overawed at the thought of taking on Vos in the final straight of the Olympic road race!
